In 1969, a committee of the South Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce circulated petitions asking the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education to take action to establish a junior college in the area. As a direct result of the interest and initiative of these citizens, Oklahoma City Community College (OCCC) opened its doors as South Oklahoma City Junior College in September 1972 with an enrollment of 1,049 students. Since 1972, OCCC has grown to be a leader in providing quality academic programs for degree-seeking students, life-enriching programs and events for the community and cutting-edge professional development for local businesses.
